Digital Teaching

Digital teaching is supervised by the Competence Center E-Learning (CCE), which also operates the central e-learning platform ILIAS and accompanies e-learning projects at all UoC Faculties. Besides using ILIAS as a learning management system, the CCE also supports the implementation of e-examinations within the framework of the Electronic Examination Center (EPC).

With about 3,200 ILIAS courses, the e-learning platform of the University of Cologne is one of the largest at German-speaking universities.

The CCE actively promotes the further development and expansion of the ILIAS platform - e.g. through tools for online seminars or providing an electronic key text collection.

What is digital teaching and e-learning?

E-learning means using digital media for teaching and learning purposes. The reasons for using e-learning are as diverse as the different application scenarios themselves. Many lecturers would like to make more materials available to students or offer a greater variety of methods. This enables students to study more individually or to learn at a faster or slower pace. Organizational conditions can also be reasons for the development of digital learning offers. An example of this is the flexibilization of study programmes thanks to the fact that they are not tied to a specific time or place.

What are the advantages of digital teaching and e-learning?

Using digital resources for teaching and learning offers a whole new range of possibilites. The advantage over a book is that thanks to the use of digital media, simulations, animations or videos can also be embedded. More and more lecturers share this opinion, which increases interest in the development of own scenarios and their successful use for teaching. New developments are also driven by this growing interest. Today it is even possible to provide interactive videos. Students are thus no longer just passive consumers. But not only providing digital teaching and learning material is becoming more and more popular. Digital tools also open up new possibilities in communication, organization, and collaboration. For example, students can blog about a course or jointly create a wiki.

ILIAS offers many different digital tools. The application possibilities and social forms can be varied. The digitization of your course can therefore be an exciting process. Developing a digital resource or class challenges not only your professional competence. Planning a digital class also requires competences in the field of educational design. The digital processing of your material requires tact and sensitivity in the field of multimedia design. For the integration of your materials on ILIAS you need technical competences. The CCE would like to support you in acquiring the necessary skills and therefore offers training, workshops, and consulting.
